Configuring your database server

This article is part of To install Cloud Cruiser:

1. Configure database

You must install a compatible database server in accordance with the vendor’s recommendations and best practices. Then perform the tasks here that are relevant to your database platform before installing Cloud Cruiser.

Configuring all database servers

If installing the database server on a dedicated server (recommended), ensure that the server’s firewall is properly configured to allow external access from the Cloud Cruiser application server.

If the database server will reside on the same machine as the Cloud Cruiser application, ensure that sufficient hardware resources (memory, disk, and processor cores) are provisioned.

Before installing the Cloud Cruiser application, make note of a database administrator username and password, the database server’s IP address or hostname, its port number, and ensure that the database server is running.

You can configure how Cloud Cruiser connects to your database. For more information see Modifying the database connection.

Configuring Oracle

No additional steps are required for an Oracle database server.

Configuring Microsoft SQL Server

This section explains the configuration you must perform to SQL Server before running the Cloud Cruiser installer.

If your SQL Server database is hosted on Microsoft Windows Azure, see the Knowledge Base article Installing with an Azure SQL database. In this case the configuration listed here does not apply.

Authentication

Cloud Cruiser recommends that you set SQL Server to Mixed Mode authentication. You can set this option either during or after installation of SQL Server.

You can use Windows authentication, but it requires an extra step after installing Cloud Cruiser. For more information, see Configuring Windows authentication with SQL Server.

To set SQL Server to use Mixed Mode authentication after installation

  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Right-click the server name and select Properties.

To enable the TCP/IP protocol

  1. Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  2. Under SQL Server Network Configuration, check that the TCP/IP protocol is Enabled.
  3. Right-click TCP/IP, choose Properties, click the IP Address tab, and do the following:
    • Make sure that every IP Address’s Active status is set to Yes.
    • Make sure that every IP Address’s TCP Port is set to 1433.
    • For IPAll, make sure that TCP Dynamic Ports is blank.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the SQL Server service.
