Optimizing system disk space

This topic provides information to help you minimize and optimize Cloud Cruiser's use of disk space.

Install on separate partitions

Consider installing Cloud Cruiser on its own partition (such as the D drive on Windows systems). Additionally, consider installing your Cloud Cruiser working directory in a partition separate from the Cloud Cruiser partition. Using dedicated Cloud Cruiser partitions is important especially on Windows systems, which can take increasing amounts of space on the primary partition with system updates.

If you are using Microsoft SQL Server, consider installing it on its own partition, separate from the Cloud Cruiser partition.

Use Windows file compression

On Windows systems, consider using file compression for large subdirectories of your Cloud Cruiser working directory (usually cc-working). While compression can negatively impact system performance, it also has a large beneficial impact on the amount of space used by Cloud Cruiser. To conserve disk space, HPE recommends that you compress the following directories, which can grow to be very large over time:

  • processing
  • usage_files
  • logs

To compress a Cloud Cruiser directory

  1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to your Cloud Cruiser working directory.
  2. Right-click the directory to compress, and select Properties.
  3. Click Advanced, and then in the Advanced Attributes dialog box check the Compress contents to save disk space field.

  4. In the Advanced Attributes dialog box, click OK.
  5. In the Properties dialog box, click OK.
  6. When prompted to confirm the change, select the Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files option, and then click OK.

Use the Clean Up Directory workflow step

The Clean Up Directory workflow step deletes files from the specified Cloud Cruiser directory that are more than the specified number of days older than the select date (based on the date in the filenames). Use this step to clean up old intermediate processing files for each workbook you have in production.

The Clean Up Directory step deletes only those files whose names include a date in the YYYYMMDD format, such as Sheet1_20150901_Sheet1_AggregationRows_out.ccr.

Set the Directory field to ${env.processDir}. HPE recommends that you set the Retention Days field to a number no less than 31, to ensure that you always have processing files for the most recent month. Usually, retaining processing files for the past 60 days is sufficient.
